The ESMA Museum and Site of Memory, Former Clandestine Center of Detention, Torture and Extermination has participated in the Night of the Museums ever since this massive event organized by the City of Buenos Aires was created back in 2015.
The first time the Museum participated in this event we invited representatives from human rights organizations to tour the building together with the public. We organized two types of tours –full and short– so each visitor can choose their preferred duration and areas of interest. In 2016, we had tours alongside human rights organizations advocates and a dance performance in the gardens. In 2017, together with the Civil Organization Cero a la Derecha, we organized an experience called Books of Memory, ESMA Stories in the First Person. Set against the massive element of the event, in this activity special guests –”book people”– sat to be read by the audience in intimate meetings. Participants included survivors of the clandestine center, relatives of the disappeared, an ESMA Case prosecutor, a plaintiff attorney in the trials for crimes against humanity, the director of the National Bank of Genetic Data, and an archeologist and preservation specialist who works with the marks on the building that stand as judicial evidence, among others.
During the three editions of the Night of the Museums, the ESMA Museum and Site of Memory operated at full capacity, welcoming more than 1500 people in each edition.
