In the context of the ESMA Museum and Site of Memory’s application to the UNESCO World Heritage List, officials from the MERCOSUR Institute of Public Policies on Human Rights (IPPDH) toured the Museum on Wednesday, March 3. The group, which included executive secretary Ariela Peralta, the director of Institutional Relations Andressa Caldas, and the head of Communication and Culture Cecilia Batemarco, expressed their support for the application and highlighted the relevance of joint effort for the benefit of the region.

«The Museum’s candidacy before UNESCO is extremely important and means a lot for the region, not only because it implies more memory, more truth, more justice and more reparation for the past, but also because it is the construction of public policies for the future,» said Peralta, who visited the Museum for the first time.

For his part, Caldas highlighted the articulation between the Museum and the IPPDH, and considered it essential for the nomination strategy. «We value this networking because it shows the effort that is being made to have this heritage incorporated as a global value,» she stressed.

Lastly, Batemarco referred to the synergy between the principles of the IPPDH and the Work Plan for the nomination. «Everything that is being done in the Museum around the reflection on heritage is very important for Argentina and for the entire region,» said the official, who had already participated in a conference organized by the team behind the candidacy, where she spoke about the conservation and keeping of Spaces of Memory.

The guided tour was led by Alejandra Naftal, executive director of the Museum, and followed by a presentation by Mauricio Cohen Salama and Mayki Gorosito, General Coordinator of the Work Plan and Coordinator of International Cooperation of the candidacy.
