Organized by the teachers’ union CTERA, the webinar «Education, Democracy and Human Rights» was held on May 28, and served as the framework for the signing of an agreement of articulation with its analogous Italian organization, the UIL-Scuola. During the meeting, and with the goal of strengthening and exchanging pedagogical experiences on Human Rights, there was a presentation of the Museum and Site of Memory’s  candidacy to the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The meeting was presented by the Secretary General of CTERA, Sonia Alesso, and Pino Turi, her peer at the UIL-Scuola. They presented the details of the agreement that will lead to a series of joint events that will conclude in 2023 with the World Congress of Education International in Argentina. “It is very important that we are able to share our country’s tradition of Human Rights activism and continue building Memory together with different colleagues,” Alesso said. And Turi stressed: “The world has to be more united around these issues. We have to fight for people’s rights to freedom.”

Before presenting the candidacy of the ESMA Museum and Site of Memory, which is regarded as fundamental in the exchange of political experiences in Human Rights, speeches were given by Roberto Baradel, Deputy Secretary of CTERA, and Taty Almeida, member of Mothers of Plaza de Mayo – Founders. Baradel mentioned the importance of the Mothers’ resistance and struggle. Then, Almeida reviewed her life and commitment to the organization. “It is essential that democracy and Memory be transmitted through education,” she pointed out.

In her turn, Alejandra Naftal, the executive director of the Museum, went over the details of the application to UNESCO and said: «I do not believe that the Museum is a school, as many of the people who visit say, but it is a fundamental pedagogy tool for teachers to open debates on the construction of Memory. In order to be on the World Heritage List, the support of the State and civil society is fundamental, and within this framework, the educational field is essential”.

Other speakers included Rogelio de Leonardi, Secretary of Human Rights of CTERA, Ivana Veronese, Secretary of the UIL confederation and Secretary of Training, Victorio Paulón, Secretary of Human Rights of CTA de los Trabajadores, Mariolina Ciarnella, President of the Institute of Training and Research of the UIL-Scuola, and Rossella Benedetti, International Secretary UIL-Scuola.
